Talk about NOT learning from History!
David Obey and his fellow house Democrats have, for a forth time, announced their intent to try to loose a war for the United States of America. Obey recalled with nostalgia 1969 when he first came to congress with the intent of supporting international communism’s fight to subjugate the peoples of Southeast Asia. That great success of congressional democrats, including Obey personally, and the American Left not only destroyed a “right-wing Republican”; Richard Nixon (arguably the most leftist president in American History) they succeed in bringing Stalinism to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The stellar achievements included a unified communist Vietnam with its mass executions, mass prison camps, and refugees so desperate that they set out into shark-infested waters in leaky boats – without any clear destination. In Cambodia, Mr. Obey’s success was even more complete. There, the personality-cult leader of the left; Pol Pot (seems familiar, a leftist personality cult-thing….hummm) led an effort to bring Change to Cambodia in the form of expunging all western culture – by killing anyone who could speak a foreign language, or had any hint of western ways. Mr. Pot literally emptied the main cities and forced the population into the county-side at gun point – to revolutionize the culture and bring Hope and Change for a more progressive future – several millions or about a quarter of the population was killed in the process, but Change is an important goal.
Mr. Obey’s second try to loose a war didn’t work out very well. Despite attempts to support international communism’s triumph over the reactionary forces of Western Europe and the United States, by defunding the American military and withholding support for Russian dissidents, Poland’s Solidarity movement and any other anti-progressive forces – the forces of darkness triumphed and that great bulwark of human progress – the iron curtain – and its most visible manifestation – the Berlin wall – came tumbling down. In the resulting thaw, KGB records inadvertently slipped into the wrong hands and great progressives from Alger Hiss to Jonathan Pollard were compromised. Fortunately continued control of the western press and academia by progressive forces had kept the damage to a minimum.
Mr. Obey and his colleagues achieved a partial success in their next great objective – an American loss in Iraq. Despite the temporary expediency of supporting the United States’ efforts against Islamic fascism post 9/11, the Democrats “came home” (to borrow from George McGovern) to anti-Americanism, in their insistence that 1) Iraq is a diversion - Afghanistan was the real fight worth fighting, 2) American forces were the bad guys (this worked well during Vietnam) eg Abu Grab, Hadeitha (just ask John Murtha) etc. 3) killing Islamic fascists and fanatics only makes more of them not less, 4) the secular-Bathists, Sunni-Al-Qaeda and Shia would never work together therefore Al-Qaeda doesn’t exist in Iraq [wrong] and they would never work together an an insurgency [wrong] and Shia Iran would be a constraining force [wrong] and 5) most important, Iraqi political progress had to be made before American military protection should be extended and that Political Progress would lead to a better Security [180° wrong]. The left’s efforts to secure defeat in Iraq were matched by their relentless efforts to destroy the Republican party, by destroying George Bush. This was great fun because Bush arrived at the curious idea that not fighting back elevated the debate [wrong]. At any rate the left’s 100 billion dollar investment in anti-Bush propaganda (well it was basically all free media – but if you could put a number on it…) made a major contribution to giving us BO – the rewards of which will last generations- maybe better than Pol Pot! But on the Iraq front, the main argument by Obey and the left was that Bush is a liar and that security can only be enhanced after political progress is made, so if we can just pull the rug out from under the fledgling Iraqi government – they’ll straighten-up and fly-right. Bush (remember he is a liar) went completely insane and did the opposite based on the word of another liar, General David (Betray-us) Patraeus. Bush (the liar) launched a “surge” to occupy ground and protect the Iraqi population from the insurgency. This, Obey and they left know, did nothing, but by complete accident, Iraq’s violence was quelled and dramatic political progress followed. Because of political expediency, BO needs to keep Iraq from experiencing the kind of Hope and Change Obey wanted for it – the kind that Cambodia got to experience under that great progressive Pol Pot and Iraq would have experienced under that great freedom-fighter Abu Musab al-Zarqawi – if the US military hadn’t shortened his “head-chopper” of a career.
Now Obey believes we need to do the same thing in Afghanistan - as soon as possible – ya know - pull the rug out from under the fledgling Afghan government to achieve political progress. Unfortunately, short-term political expediency is keeping BO from the kind of progressive agenda in Afghanistan which Obey would like and worst of all that other liar, Petraeus, is still around messing things up by trying to win. But toady we learn that Mr. Obey and his House colleagues have put the fix in for Petraeus, they provided the funding for Afghanistan, ( “No one can say we didn’t!” ) but they were careful to keep the money filtered by their allies and fellow travelers - The State Department. So you can bet that if Petraeus attempts any tricky tactics, that the Taliban will be; 1) forewarned, 2) given time to react, and 3) supported by a relentless harassment of US and Afghan government forces by “International Human Rights” groups, egged on by the State Department and its MoveOn.org friends.
Commentators frequently cite experiences in WWII or other situations as historical lessons from which to draw – but the surge was in 2007! Obey and the House Democrats did learn the lesson though – that General David Patraeus is a dangerous figure and cannot be trusted to loose. So one must give the appearance of supporting his mission, while making sure he’ll be denied the resources in a timely manner. Supplying military funding through the State Department, who’s career people, current Secretary Hillary Clinton and ultimate “leader” BO all opposed Patraeus’s surge plans in Iraq and will almost certainly look for any opportunity to pull the rug out from under him in Afghanistan, is a formula for disaster [which equals a great advance of progressivism/ Anti-Americanism]. Prediction – look for conflict between Cent-Com and the Department of State over the Afghan campaign which will result in; 1) slow failure in the Afghan campaign, 2) angry resignation of Petraeus, and 3) victory for the Taliban/David Obey. This looking foreword is getting depressing.
